Breezes of Mercy – The 15th Night of Sha’ban

Muhammed Ibn Maslimah (RA) narrates: ‘Verily, Allâh has certain ‘breezes’ (of mercy) during the year. Expose yourselves to it. Perhaps one of these breezes blows upon you and you will never become unfortunate’. [Tabrânî; P. 180, V. 3 – Dar Al Haramain]

The month of Sha’bân, the precursor to the grand month of Allâh – Ramadân is one of those months on the Islamic calendar which if given due importance and consideration will prove to be of great merit and elevate its maintainer to a lofty spiritual level as well as bring him closer to Allâh.

Usâmah bin Zaid (RA) says, ‘I enquired, O! Rasûlullâh (S.A.W) I do not notice you fasting in other months as I observe you fasting during the month of Sha’bân?’ Rasûlullâh (S.A.W) replied, ‘This is a month, in which many people are heedless. It occurs between Rajab and Ramadân. This is a month in which the a’mâl (deeds) are raised up to Allâh. I desire that my a’mâl be raised up whilst I am fasting’. [Nasaî; P. 201, V.4 – Al Matbu’ât Al Islâmiyyah]

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE 15TH NIGHT OF SHA’BÂN (SHABE-BARÂ’AT):

It is reported from Alaa bin Harith (RA) that Hazrat Aisha (RA) said: ‘One night Rasûlullâh (S.A.W) woke up and performed Salâh. He prolonged the Sajdah to such an extent that I wondered whether he had passed away. Seeing this, I got up and shook his foot. Perceiving movement, I felt at ease. When Rasûlullâh (S.A.W) Lifted his head from Sajdah and completed his Salâh, he said: “0 Humairah! Did you think that the Nabi (S.A.W) had deceived you?” I replied in the negative and said: “I swear in the name of Allah, due to the length of your Sajdah I thought that you had passed away.” Nabi (S.A.W) said: ‘Do you know what night this is?” I said: ‘Allah and his Rasul (S.A.W) know best.’ He said: ‘This is the fifteenth night of Sha’bân. Allah looks at His servants in this night and forgives those who seek forgiveness, shows mercy upon those who seek mercy and delays the decision of those who harbour feelings of hatred for others. ” – Baihaqi has narrated this Hadith as well and says that this is also an acceptable Mursal. It is possible that Alâ reported from Makhûl also.

THOSE DEPRIVED OF ALLÂH’S (RA) FORGIVENESS AND MERCIES DURING THE NIGHT OF THE 15TH OF SHA’BÂN:

Mu’âz (RA) narrates that Rasûlullâh (S.A.W) said, ‘Allâh gazes with special mercy towards the entire creation during the night of the 15th of Sha’bân and forgives all his servants with the exception of a mushrik (polytheist) and a person harbouring enmity (towards others)’. [Tabrani, Targhîb, Sahîh Ibn Hibb; V. 12 – Ar-Risâlah]

Âishah (RA) narrates that Rasûlullâh (S.A.W) said, ‘Jibra’îl (AS) came to me and said, ‘This is the 15th night of Sha’bân. Allâh (RA) emancipates people from the fire during this night equivalent to the hair of the goats of the Kalb tribe. Allâh (RA) does not look (with mercy) at a mushrik during this night, neither to a person harbouring enmity, neither to a person who severs family ties, neither to a person who allows his garments to flow below his ankles, neither to a person who is disobedient to his parents and neither to an addicted alcoholic’. [Targhîb-wat-Tarhîb, Baihaqî (Shu’ab); P. 363 V. 5 – Maktabah Ar-Rushd]

‘Abdullâh Ibn ‘Amr (RA) narrates that Rasûlullâh (S.A.W) said, ‘Allâh glances towards His creation with special mercy during the 15th night of Sha’bân and forgives all His servants with the exception of two (persons); a person who harbours hatred and a murderer’. [Musnad Ahmed; P. 216, V. 11 – Ar-Risâlah]

SPECIAL PROCLAMATION ON THE NIGHT OF THE 15TH OF SHA’BÂN:

‘Uthmân ibn Abul ‘Âs (RA) narrates that Rasûlullâh (S.A.W) said, ‘When the 15th night of Sha’bân appears, a proclaimer proclaims, ‘Is there anyone seeking forgiveness that I may forgive him? Is there anyone asking that I may grant him?’ Whoever asks (on that night) is granted (his request) with the exception of an adulteress and a mushrik’. [Durrul Manthûr, Baihaqî (Shu’ab); P. 365 V. 5 – Maktabah Ar-Rushd]

From these Ahâdith, one may easily understand the great merit of this night as well as the importance of performing good deeds therein. In this way, one becomes exposed to the breezes of the mercies of Allâh.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE IN THIS NIGHT?

Salâh: One should attempt to perform lengthy Salâh’s.
Tilâwah: Recite as much of the Qur’ân Majîd as possible.
Engage in Zikrullâh, Durûd and Istighfâr.
Sincerely implore Allâh (RA) for forgiveness and pledge to Allâh (RA) that one will not sin in future.

THE LEAST WE COULD DO IS:

Perform ‘Ishâ’ and Fajr Salâh with Jamâ’at in the Masjid thereby securing the Ibâdat of the entire night.
Begging Allâh for forgiveness and other needs.
