Is it Sunnah to use Bakhoor and Oud fragrance?

Question:

Is it true that burning of Bakhoor, Oudh and other incense to fragnate the air through its smoke is Sunnah?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is Sunnah for one to burn Bakhoor, Oudh, Incense Costus and other fragrances.

There are many virtues of burning Bakhoor and other fragrances mentioned in the Hadeeth.

Hereunder are a few Ahadeeth:

حدثني هارون بن سعيد الأيلي وأبو طاهر وأحمد بن عيسى (قال أحمد: حدثنا. وقال الآخران: أخبرنا) ابن وهب. أخبرني مخرمة عن أبيه، عن نافع. قال:

كان ابن عمر إذا استجمر بالألوة، غير مطراة. وبكافور يطرحه مع الألوة. ثم قال: هكذا كان يستجمر رسول صلى الله عليه وسلم.

1. Translation: Hadhrat Ibn Umar used to burn pure Oudh and camphor mixed with Oudh as incense fragrance. He said “Likewise, Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) used to burn incense.” (Saheeh Muslim, Hadeeth #2254)

حدثنا صدقة بن الفضل أخبرنا ابن عيينة قال سمعت الزهري عن عبيد الله عن أم قيس بنت محصن قالت سمعت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول عليكم بهذا العود الهندي فإن فيه سبعة أشفية يستعط به من العذرة ويلد به من ذات الجنب

Translation: Hadhrat Umm Qais Bint Mihsan narrates that “I heard the Prophet (sallallahu aleihi wa sallam) saying, “Treat with the Indian incense, for it has healing for seven diseases; it is to be sniffed by one having throat trouble, and to be put into one side of the mouth of one suffering from pleurisy.” (Saheeh al-Bukhari, Hadeeth # 5368, Kitab al-Tibb)

إن أمثل ما تداويتم به الحجامة والقسط البحري. وقال: لا تعذبوا صبيانكم بالغمز من العذرة وعليكم بالقسط

3. Translation: Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said, “Cupping (Hijama) and Qust al-Bahri (Sea Incense Costus) are the best of your remedies”. He added, “You should not harm your children by treating tonsillitis by pressing their tonsils, rather use Qust al-Bahri (Sea Incense Costus)”. (Saheeh al-Bukhari, Hadeeth # 5371, Muslim, Hadeeth # 1577, Nasa’ie, Hadeeth # 1577, Musnad Ahmed, Hadeeth # 7581 ).
