Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam-may Allah send peace and salutations upon him. Aameen) said:

النَّاسُ مَعَادِنُ كَمَعَادِنِ الْفِضَّةِ وَالذَّهَبِ، خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ إِذَا فَقُهُوا

People are mines like the mines of gold and silver. The best of people during ignorance (pre-Islamic era) are the best in Islam when they understand.

(Sahih Muslim, Vol.4 Pg.2031, Dar Ihyā At-Turāth Al-Arabi Beirut)

The value of a land cannot be judged by its surface. When one digs the land and goes deep into it, the value of the land is then realized when it presents gold, silver and other precious minerals hidden within it.

Similarly, one cannot judge people from their outer appearance. When we approach the depths of the hearts of people, to mine the ideal qualities within their hearts, the ideal person is then realized.
