Question:
In these times of turmoil in Syria, please can you enumerate all those Ahadith that speak about the virtues of Al-Shaam.
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Before presenting the virtues of Shaam, it is important to note that Shaam does not refer to present-day Syria. It is referred to as The Levant, which today consists of Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Israel, part of southern Turkey, and the Aleppo Vilayet.[1]
Apart from the fact that the region of Shaam is home to the birthplaces and graves of numerous Ambiyā Alayhim-us-Salām, many other virtues have been mentioned in the Ahādīth. Hereunder are some of these Ahādīth:
Zaid Ibn Thābit Radi Allāhu Anhu narrates, “We were with Rasulullāh Sallallāhu Alayhi Wa Sallam compiling the Qur’ān from pieces of cloth, when Rasulullāh Sallallāhu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: ‘Glad tidings be for Shaam.’ We asked, ‘Why is that so O Rasulullāh?’ He replied, ‘This is because the angels of Allāh have spread their (protective) wings over it (Shaam).’”[2]
‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Umar Radi Allāhu Anhu narrates that Rasulullāh Sallallāhu Alayhi Wa Sallam said, “Such a fire will emerge from Hadhr-a-Maut (a place in Yemen) before Qiyāmah which will gather the people.’ The people asked, ‘O Rasulullāh! What do you advise us to do (if we are faced with it)?’ He replied, ‘Take refuge in Shaam.’”[3]
‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Umar Radi Allāhu Anhu narrates that I heard Rasulullāh Sallallāhu Alayhi Wa Sallam saying, “There shall be constant emigrations (in the near future). The best of the people will be those who hold fast to the place of emigration of Ibrahim ‘Alayi-s-Salām (i.e Shaam). The worst of the earth’s people will remain, cast out by their lands, abhorred by Allāh and the fire will gather them with the apes and swines.”[4]
Mu’awiyah bin Qurrah Rahimahu Allāh narrates from his father that Rasulullāh Sallallāhu Alayhi Wa Sallam said, “When the inhabitants of Shaam become corrupt, then there shall be no good in you. There will always remain a group in my Ummah who will be helped (by Allāh), they will not be harmed by those who forsake them until Qiyāmah.”[5]
Aws Ibn Aws Radi Allāhu Anhu narrates that Rasulullāh Sallallāhu Alayhi Wa Sallam said, “Īsā ‘Alayhi-s-Salām shall descend near the white minaret in Eastern Damascus.” [6]
Abū Dhar Radi Allāhu Anhu narrates that Rasulullāh Sallallāhu Alayhi Wa Sallam said, “Shaam is the land of Resurrection and Gathering.”[7]

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ البَغْدَادِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: سَتَخْرُجُ نَارٌ مِنْ حَضْرَمَوْتَ أَوْ مِنْ نَحْوِ بَحْرِ حَضْرَمَوْتَ قَبْلَ يَوْمِ القِيَامَةِ تَحْشُرُ النَّاسَ قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا؟ قَالَ: عَلَيْكُمْ بِالشَّامِ.

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «سَتَكُونُ هِجْرَةٌ بَعْدَ هِجْرَةٍ، فَخِيَارُ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ أَلْزَمُهُمْ مُهَاجَرَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَيَبْقَى فِي الْأَرْضِ شِرَارُ أَهْلِهَا تَلْفِظُهُمْ أَرْضُوهُمْ، تَقْذَرُهُمْ نَفْسُ اللَّهِ، وَتَحْشُرُهُمُ النَّارُ مَعَ الْقِرَدَةِ وَالْخَنَازِيرِ»

[590] حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمُعَلَّى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ الْقَاضِي ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ .ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، قَالا : ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الأَشْعَثِ الصَّنْعَانِيِّ ، عَنْ أَوْسِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : ” يَنْزِلُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ عِنْدَ الْمَنَارَةِ الْبَيْضَاءِ شَرْقِيَّ دِمَشْقَ “

[3965] حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُسْتَمِرِّ ، قَالَ : نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارِ بْنِ بِلالٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ، قَالَ : نَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” الشَّامُ أَرْضُ الْمَحْشَرِ ، وَالْمَنْشَرِ “
.وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لا نَعْلَمُهُ يُرْوَى عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ إِلا بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ إِلا رَجُلًا حَدَّثَ بِهِ لَمْ يُتَابِعْ عَلَيْهِ فَرَوَاهُ عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ.
