Question:

Is it permissible to use black henna, mehndi on the hands or feet, the question is not in regards to the color, but because there are chemicals used in it, is it still permissible to apply it even with these chemicals?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaikum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible for a woman to use black henna which contains chemicals provided that there are no impure ingredients in the chemicals.

If the chemicals is medically proven to be harmful to health, then it should be avoided.

One should use natural henna as natural henna is safe, it contains no dangerous chemical dyes or harsh additives. Natural henna, when applied to the skin rarely causes any adverse reactions.

(ويحل خضاب اليد والرجل للنساء، ما لم يكن فيه تماثيل) أي صور، لأن ذلك من أجل الزينة، فيجوز لهن بشرط أن يمتنعن عن المحرم.

(ويحرم للرجال) أي يحرم خضاب اليد والرجل للرجل (والصبيان مطلقاً) يعني سواء كانت فيه تماثيل أو لم تكن، لأنهم ممنوعون عن مثل هذه الزينة، إلا لأجل التداوي.
