Question:
What is the ruling on a woman saving her money which her husband gives her and helping her family out financially without the knowledge of her husband? Is this permitted in Islaam?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, if the husband gave the money to his wife for her complete personal use, then she is the owner of that money. She may spend the money as she wishes to.
However, we advise that marriage is based on trust and transparency.
Therefore, in the spirit of transparency, the wife should inform her husband regarding her family’s financial situation and her intention to assist her family members.
