Question:

Normally during the 1st 3months of pregnancy you do not tell anyone you are pregnant becos it is a very important time, you only tell you close family however my sister in law has been married for longer thn me and she has been trying for the last few months to fall pregnant and now recently i found out i am pregnant…how do i tell my brother and sister in law without causing harm to myself…is there any dua i can read to protect my baby n myself from evil eye and nazar

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Firstly, we ask Allāh Ta’ālā to bless you with righteous offspring.

Secondly, Pregnancy is a bounty from Allāh Ta`ālā. To speak about the bounties of Allāh Ta’ālā is encouraged. Allāh Ta’āla mentions in the Holy Qur’ān:

وأما بنعمة ربك فحدث (الضحى11)

And about the bounty of your Lord, mention it. [93:11]

Therefore, one may inform one’s close relatives and friends the news of one’s pregnancy in a modest way. The news should be given only to those who wish good for you and will rejoice over it, so as to ward off the evil eye. This is a general principle which should be paid attention to when informing others of your blessings.

Thirdly, keep the following in mind when informing your sister in law of your pregnancy:

• Be considerate when breaking the news to your sister in law.
• Don’t inform them in front of everyone else.
• Don’t take their reaction personally
• Inform her that a woman who can’t conceive children may pride herself to be included in the following hadith;

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مَنْ مَاتَ لَهُ فَرَطَانِ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَدْخَلَهُ اللهُ الْجَنَّةَ» ، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: وَمَنْ مَاتْ لَهُ فَرَطٌ؟ قَالَ: «وَمَنْ مَاتَ لَهُ فَرَطٌ يَا مُوَفَّقَةُ» ، قَالَتْ: فَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ فَرَطٌ؟ قَالَ: «فَأَنَا فَرَطُ أُمَّتِي لَمْ يُصَابُوا بِمِثْلِي المعجم الكبير للطبراني (12/ 197)

Translation:

Ibn Abbās (Radiyallāhu anhu) reported that Nabī (Sallāllāhualaīhiwasalam) said:

Whosoever from my Ummah has two children that pass away before the parents then, Allāh Tā`la will enter the parents into paradise because of the two children. So Aisha (Radiyallāhu Anha) enquired: What about the person, who has one child that passes away before them, Nabī Sallāllāhu alahi wasallam replied:  the same will be awarded to those who have one child that passed away before them. Aisha (Radiyallāhu Anha) further asked: what about them who no children passed away before them? Nabī (Sallāllāhu alahiwasalam) replied: then I will be the one to go ahead of them and prepare for them.

Fourthly, one may recite the following Duā’s to protect one’s self and family from the evil of the eye:

Rasūlullāh (Sallallāhu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Whosoever recites the following Duā three times every morning and every evening, nothing will harm him.” ^[i]

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ، وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ العَلِيمُ (سنن ابن ماجة: 1273)

‘In the Name of Allah by whose Name nothing in the earth or the heaven is harmed. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.’(Sunan ibn Mājah: 1273)

Rasūllullāh Sallallāhu Alaihi Wasallam has taught us this Du’ā to be protected from the evil of the eye. The Du’ā is as follows:^[ii]

أعوذ بكلمات الله التامة من كل شيطان وهامة ومن كل عين لامة (مصنف عبد الرزاق الصنعاني: 336)

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allāh Tā`la from the evil of what he has created. (Musannaf abdul-al-Razāq; 336)

 

اعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق (موطأ مالك ت الأعظمي: 263)

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allāh Tā`la from the evil of what he has created.(Muwatta Imam Mālik: 263)

بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ يُبْرِيكَ وَمِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ يَشْفِيكَ وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ وَشَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي عَيْنٍ (صحيح مسلم)

“In the name of Allah, may He cure you from all kinds of illnesses and safeguard you from the evil of a jealous one when he feels jealous and from the evil influence of eye.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2185)

It was the Sunnah of Rasūlullāh (Sallallāhu Alaihi Wasallam) that he would recite Sūrah Ikhlās, Sūrah Falaq and Sūrah Nās at night before retiring to bed. He would then blow on his hands and wipe over his entire body.^[iii]
