Story writing in Islam

  1. Can we write stories?
  2. If yes, what are the things we should take care of while writing them?
  3. Can we give the characters in the story non-Muslim names? Can we publish our stories?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to write and compile incidents (stories) of real life events on condition that it does not infringe anyone’s rights. Writing and publishing fictitious incidents will not be permissible if:

  1. One creates an impression that the incident is true.
  2. It is pure entertainment and pass time and there is no benefit whatsoever.
  3. If the writing does not create a wrong impression of it being a real life incident and there is some benefit in such writing for example, the story conveys a good moral etc, then it is permissible.[1]

There is no restriction in naming the characters according to non-Muslim names.
