Can I take medication without my husband’s permission?

Question:

I suffer with  hysteria; so I get senseless at times. I have consulted numerous doctors and asked my husband to consult a homeopathic doctor who is an expert in this disease but he didn’t agree. I contacted that homeopathic doctor over the phone and took medicine (didn’t meet the doctor). I did not tell my husband. If he hears about it he will mistreat me. Is it a great sin that Allah won’t forgive?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We make dua that Allah the Almighty cures you. Aameen. Your husbands’ concern for you is understandable because, homeopathy; to say the least; is not like conventional medicine. However, if you found that all other medications weren’t helping and felt that homeopathic remedies would help you and you hid this fact from your husband, you will not be sinful. If you feel that your husband will mistreat you if he finds out, you may continue hiding this fact from him; however we advise that you try to tell him if possible.

You should pray to Allah Ta’ālā constantly and ask that he cures you. You should also recite the four Quls before you sleep and the following dua in abundance:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُنُونِ، وَالْبَرَصِ، وَالْجُذَامِ، وَسَيِّئِ الْأَسْقَامِ[1]

Transliteration: Allāhumma inni a’ūdhu bika minal junooni wal judhaami wa sayyi’il asqām.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
