Questions regarding Taraweeh Salaah

Question:

Q: Is it permisible to read short surahs in Taraweeh Salaah? Is the reward the same or less?

Q: Is it better for ladies read 2 rakaats or 4 rakaats taraaweeh with one salaam?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1. It is permissible for one to read short Surahs in Taraweeh Salaah. There are many aspects in Salaah which define the total reward that one attains. Some of these aspects are concentration (Khushoo), Ikhlaas, etc. Similarly, the more Qur’an one recites in Salaah, the more reward a person will attain.

2. In principle, it is Sunnah for one to perform Taraweeh Salaah in sets of two.

However, it is Makrooh (Abominable/disliked) for one to intentionally perform Taraweeh salaah in other denominations such as four Rakaats, etc.[1]

One is advised to follow the Sunnah manner of performing Taraweeh Salaah.
