What Is The Dua To Recite When Someone Is ill?

Question:

What Duas should one read when another family member is extremely ill or close to death (maybe)?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

One is always in need of Allāh’s Mercy, more-so at the time of illness.  Therefore abundantly recite the following Duā:

اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنَا

O’ Allāh, descend upon us Your Mercy.

Furthermore, it was the noble practice of Nabī Sallallāhu Alaihi Wa Sallam that whenever he would experience pain, he would recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nās, blow on his hands and rub over his body.[1] During Nabī Sallallāhu Alaihi Wa Sallam’s last illness, Aishah Radhiyallāhu Anhā used to recite these two Surahs and blow on Nabī Sallallāhu Alaihi Wa Sallam.  Hence, you should recite these two Surahs and blow on your relative.

Also, when you go to visit your relative, recite the following Duā:[2]

أَذْهِبِ البَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، اشْفِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

O’ Sustainer of mankind, we beg you to remove the difficulty.  Give cure and recovery as you are the Curer.  There is no cure except Your cure.  We ask you such a cure that does not leave behind any sickness.
